I have a secret…
Enhancewell is going LIVE AND IN PERSON. Details coming in February!
Getting older can feel like watching your favorite movie on VHS – a little fuzzy around the edges. But what if there was a way to turn back time and hit play on a sharper, more vibrant version of yourself?
HIIT is the way to be kind and hit rewind on aging!
HIIT the gym
HIIT stands for High-Intensity Interval Training. This type of exercise alternates between short bursts of intense activity and rest periods. Think sprinting up the stairs, followed by a leisurely stroll to catch your breath.
Here's the exciting part: researchers from Shenyang Normal University and Shanghai University of Medicine and Health Sciencesfound that "HIIT provided unexpected benefits on cognitive performance, especially in middle-aged and older populations with age-related cognitive decline." Some of those cognitive benefits include significant improvement in verbal memory and the ability to concentrate and filter out distractions.
On top of the cognitive benefits, HIIT can improve cardiorespiratory function, functional movement, and reaction times.
HIIT safety for seniors

The beauty of HIIT is in its adaptability. Just because HIIT caninclude running stairs doesn't mean we're suggesting seniors start sprinting the bleachers at their local high school stadium.
Here are a few tips to make HIIT work for aging adults:
- Listen to your body: Don't push yourself to exhaustion— no one's judging how fast or slow you go. Start small, gradually increase intensity, and take breaks whenever needed.
- Low impact can yield high results: Exercises like brisk walking, stationary cycling, and bodyweight squats can be just as effective when done at high intensity.
- Talk to your doctor first: Getting medical clearance before starting a new fitness routine is always a good idea.
Examples of Low-Impact HIIT Exercises Perfect for Seniors
Ready to get those neurons firing and your body moving? Here are some low-impact HIIT exercises you can try at home:
- Chair squats: Sit on a sturdy chair and stand up repeatedly for 30 seconds, followed by 30 seconds of rest. Repeat 3-5 times.
- Arm circles: Forward and backward arm circles for 30 seconds each, followed by 30 seconds of rest. Repeat 3-5 times.
- Marching in place: Lift your knees high as you march in place and swing your arms for balance.
Working out shouldn't be boring. Put on your favorite tunes, grab a partner (or pet), and turn your living room into a senior HIIT disco!
