Booking your first private Pilates session can feel like a big step, especially if you've never seen a reformer up close. The good news: a private session is the most beginner-friendly way to start. The entire hour is built around you.
Before You Arrive
Wear fitted clothing: leggings or fitted shorts and a fitted top. Your instructor needs to see your alignment, and loose fabric can catch on the reformer carriage or springs. Tie back long hair, and leave heavy jewelry at home.
Grip socks with rubber tread are required on all apparatus at Enhancewell, because bare feet and regular socks are too slippery on the reformer footbar and carriage. Bring your own pair, or ask us when you book. Bring water, and arrive about ten minutes early so you can change and fill out a short intake form without rushing.
The First Few Minutes: Conversation
Expect to talk before you move. A good instructor will ask about:
- Your goals: strength, posture, recovering from an injury, feeling less stiff, or simply trying something new.
- Past or current injuries, surgeries and anything your doctor or physical therapist has told you to avoid.
- Your activity level and any other training you do.
Be honest. The more your instructor knows, the better they can tailor the session.
Learning the Basics
Your first session usually focuses on fundamentals: how to breathe, how to find a neutral spine and pelvis, and how to engage your deep core without gripping. These ideas show up in every Pilates exercise, so time spent on them pays off for years.
Meeting the Apparatus
Most first sessions include the reformer, with your instructor setting the springs and showing you how to get on and off safely. Depending on your goals, you may also try the tower, the chair or some mat work. Nobody expects you to know the names of exercises. Your instructor will cue you through everything.
How It Should Feel
Pilates should feel challenging but controlled. You may notice muscles you didn't know you had, especially deep abdominals, glutes and the muscles around your shoulder blades. Sharp pain is never the goal. Speak up if anything hurts and your instructor will modify it.
After the Session
It's normal to feel a little sore the next day, especially through your core and hips. Many people also notice they feel taller and move more easily.
Your instructor may suggest how often to train. For most people working toward a specific goal, two sessions a week is a common pace. Consistency matters more than volume, so pick a schedule you can actually keep.
