In the coming days, everyone will be posting their resolutions for 2026. As a Pilates studio owner, it’s a lucrative time of year. So many people are feeling bad about their holiday binges and planning for a healthier, stronger new year.
It may come as a surprise that, instead of encouraging you to share your weight loss goals or commit to 5 classes per week, I’m going to recommend that you don’t make any resolutions this year.
Yep. You read that right.
We’re living in a busy, unstable world right now. Current events are *eventing*, and there’s never enough time to get everything done.
Setting a goal to lose 15 pounds or work out every day before work isn’t going to change that.
Stick with me, though. Before you click back to TikTok and open a bag of Doritos, let me explain.
A Resolution-Free New Year
Not setting a resolution isn’t synonymous with giving up. In fact, a resolution-free 2026 actually gives you permission to get in touch with what your body needs in the moment.
Instead of a punishing schedule or an unattainable goal, give yourself the grace to be present.
You don’t need to do it all.
Just do something small.

Choose a form of movement with the least possibility of conflict. If that’s 100 jumping jacks as soon as you get out of bed, get jumping! If that’s a lunchtime walk, pack something easy to eat on the go.
Find a time and a routine that works for you and stick with it.
Approach Fitness With a Healthy Mindset
As we age, responsibilities grow, and time seems to shrink. Here are a few things to consider for your resolution-less year:
Move for Joy, Not Obligation

- Choose a form of movement that you genuinely look forward to, even if it’s just dancing in your kitchen or stretching while watching TV.
- If you miss a workout, simply start fresh tomorrow without dwelling on the lapse.
- Focus on how movement makes you feel (energized, relaxed, stronger) rather than focusing on calories burned.
Embrace the "Small Something" Rule
- Start with 5–10 minutes of activity. Consistency beats intensity, especially when starting out.
- Not sure where to start? Take a 20-minute walk on your lunch break.
- Do 10 minutes of Pilates or yoga right after your morning coffee. If you can only manage one set of exercises, that’s enough!
Prioritize Recovery and Rest
- Schedule one day a week as a non-negotiable rest day for your body to recover.
- Focus on getting seven to nine hours of quality sleep—it’s just as important as your workout.
As others share big resolutions (that will likely be forgotten by February), make staying true to yourself your only goal. Ask “What is one thing I can do differently this week?” And once you make that small change, follow up with, “Can I do it again next week?”
