Some people just have "it." They can walk into a room and capture everyone's attention without saying a word. They communicate with ease. And they just seem like a leader.
Today, we're talking about the traits that constitute executive presence, how the definition has changed over time, and how you can learn how to set yourself apart as a leader.
What is executive presence?
Executive presence isn't about fear or a leadership title. It's trust, charisma, communication, and the ability to inspire confidence. Some people are born with it (like the kid on the playground who rallies his classmates to play a specific game), while others need to work at it. But you can learn how to have executive presence.

How has executive presence changed over time?
The era of exclusively straight, white, male leaders is over. Modern workers value inclusivity, and leadership is growing more and more diverse.
Economist and CEO of Hewlett Consulting Partners, Sylvia Ann Hewlett, surveyed business leaders and directors in 2012 and again in 2022 on the gravitas, communication, and appearance traits that comprise executive presence with surprising results.
While confidence and decisiveness topped the gravitas chart in both surveys, the similarities stopped there. In 2012, executive presence was defined by integrity, blue-chip pedigree, and emotional intelligence; those surveyed in 2022 valued inclusiveness and respect for others over integrity and vision.
When questioned about communication styles, a "listen to learn" orientation replaced forcefulness, and authenticity superseded a joking and bantering manner. Even two decades apart, the importance of superior speaking skills, command of a room, ability to read the room, and use of body language remained consistent.
Appearance matters. Across both surveys, respondents valued a polished look as the most essential trait of a leader's appearance. However, in 2012, leaders were expected to be youthful, tall, physically attractive, slim, and dressed for their "next job." In 2022, those polled valued authenticity, fitness, curation of an online image, a "new normal" style of dress, and willingness to show up in person.

How can I enhance my executive presence?
Knowledge is power; now that you know what executive presence is, you can learn how to enhance yours.
Here are a few ways to boost your executive presence:
- Maintain a polished look with regular haircuts and wrinkle-free, well-fitting clothes
- Exhibit authenticity by identifying your values and living life accordingly
- Shift your style of leadership from authoritative ("because I said so") to collaborative— listen to your colleagues to gather data before making a decision
- Practice posture — avoid crossing your arms in front of your chest and stand up straight
- Inclusiveness and diversity aren't just buzzwords — make sure those around the table at your next company meeting reflect those values
- Check your online persona — you're allowed to have a life outside work, but make sure your profiles are private if you don't want your interns stumbling upon your college-era mistakes online
