In a TikTok world, terrible boss stories trend. But almost everyone can share stories about the great leaders who shaped us into the people we are today. They’re the ones who celebrated our natural talents, taught us to keep going when we messed up and mentored us when we fell short.

So, how can you ensure you’re a leader that impacts your employees for the better? There are a few qualities that the best leaders all have in common. Focus on enhancing these qualities in yourself, and build a legacy that lasts past your retirement.

Show empathy

Life is busier than ever. With most commitments being in-person again, it’s hard to remember how we used to get it all done. According to a 2022 Bureau of Labor Statistics report, 62.3% of families have two working parents. In addition, 39.7% of people who care for a disabled or elderly adult work full-time or part-time in addition to their caregiving responsibilities.

Not all workers’ situations look the same. Get to know your employees and understand their situation if they’re willing to share. Supporting your team members may look different for various team members at different times, and that’s ok.

*Encourage innovation and strategic thinking *

We’ve all had an “it’s my way or the highway” boss. You may have tried to bring up some new ideas a time or two, but when every idea is shut down, you stop thinking outside the box. The best bosses actively encourage thinking outside the boss. You won’t be the boss forever, and the best way to make a lasting impact is to equip the next generation of leaders.

*Focus on developing others *

Encouraging employees is excellent, but is there a way to make an even longer-lasting impact? Consider how you can mentor employees in skills that will last an entire lifetime. A little time spent imparting wisdom may just change a life.

*Actively listen *

How great does it feel when someone actively listens to you instead of waiting for their turn to talk? Pretty great, right? Establish an open-door policy that allows employees to feel heard. Listening to employees builds a culture of respect and trust.

Practice gratitude

Employees doing their job should be a given. That doesn’t mean you shouldn’t express gratitude. A recent survey shows that 63% of employees feel unappreciated by their boss on a daily basis. That same study shows that 29% of employees would give up a week’s worth of pay for more appreciation. Gratitude is free, but it’s worth so much more. Take the time to show appreciation for your employees and reap the benefits of a better work environment.

For over 800 days, I posted a daily gratitude on Instagram. Is there something you can add to your day that will help you remember to practice gratitude?

How will your employees remember you 20 years from now? If you’re not sure whether they’ll have fond memories of you, it’s not too late to change your strategies. Work on enhancing these qualities and build a work culture that transforms employees.
