The world is in a period of turmoil. From political in-fighting and social media arguments to all-out war. The conflicts are very real and very serious— and yet, we're expected to continue about our day-to-day business. In today's blog post, we'll talk about leadership during a time of uncertainty and chaos and how you can create a productive environment for yourself and your team.

Stay informed

The internet is full of he-said-she-said "news" with a spin. Monitor news straight from the source to understand what's happening in the world and anticipate how it may affect your business or team members.

Social media isn't usually the best place to get your current event updates. However, if you're looking for a way to find out what's happening in the world from someone who values principle over party, give @sharonsaysso a follow. She's known as America's Government Teacher and does a fabulous job sharing and explaining the day's most important news.

Address the elephant in the room...

In a time when people are hurting, it's good to acknowledge the uncertainty in the world and make it clear that your business doesn't stand for division, racism, or hate— toward anyone. Make sure you have emergency response plans in place to protect employees and customers.

...But don't let it keep the spotlight

Unless your company is a news organization, politician's office, or humanitarian aid non-profit, be cautious of giving too much airtime to controversial topics. Emotions are high, and spending too much time discussing contentious issues can cause an irreparable rift in team dynamics.

Monitor your emotional well-being and that of your employees

When you focus on what's going on around the world or on social media, you can miss what's happening right in front of you. When times are tough, schedule check-ins with your employees to ensure they're okay, and take time for yourself. After all, you have to put on your own oxygen mask before you can help others.

Give back

It's been decades since Mr. Rogers graced our television screens, but his wisdom still rings true today. He once said, "When I was a boy and I would see scary things in the news, my mother would say to me, 'Look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping.'"

Are there ways that your organization can be a part of the solution to a chaotic world? Can you support customers affected by the situation? Can you host a food, clothing, or toy drive for hurting people?

Turn a divisive situation into one that pulls people together.

When times are hard, there is no one right answer. As an entrepreneur, you know your business better than anyone. With the help of a consulting team, you can craft a strategy for tumultuous times that strengthens team dynamics, supports customers, and weathers any storm.
