If you know me, you know I’m never without my WHOOP. The minimalist, screen-free fitness wearable auto-tracks my activity. But then, I got an Oura ring for Christmas. The smart ring is so unintrusive that I often forget I’m wearing it— at least until I see all the data of my day’s activities and my night’s sleep score.
Clients often ask me which fitness tracker they should use, so I’m pitting my two favorites against each other: the sleek Oura Ring and the performance-focused WHOOP strap. Let’s see if it’s a battle of style versus substance or if you can have your cake (healthy, of course) and eat it too!
Oura: The ring that rules your sleep (and looks good doing it)
The Oura is a fitness tracker that looks like jewelry. This stylish little band’s sleek design makes it comfortable to wear to sleep, and it does a fantastic job tracking sleep stages, heart rate variability (HRV), and even body temperature, giving you a comprehensive understanding of your rest. And its new AI coaching feature can give you tips for even better rest and recovery.
Beyond sleep, Oura also tracks your daily activity, steps, and calorie burn. It’s great for those who want a holistic view of their well-being, with a particular emphasis on recovery and achieving your fitness goals. One downside is that the Oura can get scratched, so you shouldn’t wear it while lifting weights.
The Oura is by far the most fashionable fitness wearable on the market, allowing you to choose from different finishes and styles so it complements your outfit instead of clashing with it. Aside from noticing them on fellow Oura-wearers (and subsequently comparing sleep notes), you’d never even know the stylish band was collecting data.
WHOOP: The strap that speaks athlete
Now, let’s talk about the WHOOP. This wristband removes all the distracting bells and whistles (like the screens or alerts you’ll get with Apple Watch and Fitbit), leaving all the functionality. WHOOP is all about data, tracking everything from your heart rate and sleep to your strain (how hard you’re pushing yourself) and recovery.
WHOOP excels at providing actionable insights. It doesn’t just tell you how you slept; it tells you how you recovered and how ready you are to tackle your next workout. It’s a favorite among athletes and fitness enthusiasts who are serious about optimizing their performance (see: Cristiano Ronaldo on the brand’s homepage).
The WHOOP strap is less about fashion and more about function, although it boasts that it’s the most customizable fitness wearable with more than 74,000 color and material combinations. WHOOP can be worn on the wrist (where it feels a little awkward if you like to wear a watch) or the bicep. The only thing that looks better than a fashionable fitness wearable is one you can’t see at all, right?
Which one’s right for you?
That depends on your priorities!
- Fashion-forward and focused on sleep? Oura is your winner.
- Performance-driven and obsessed with data? WHOOP is your jam.
Here’s some good news: you don’t have to choose. Some people (like me!) even use both— Oura for sleep and style, and WHOOP for hardcore training data. I’m looking forward to seeing how the data tracks as I wear both of them and finding new and creative ways to dress them up and down.
Ultimately, the best fitness tracker is the one you’ll wear consistently. Whether you prefer Oura’s sleek design or WHOOP’s data-driven approach, the key is to find a tracker that fits your lifestyle and helps you achieve your fitness goals.
