It's that time of year— we've traded bikinis and sandals for beanies and cozy sweaters. You’re definitely not alone if you’re tempted to start the Harry Potterseries for the 18th time and huddle under a fluffy blanket until spring. But here's the thing: the great outdoors doesn't stop being great just because we have fewer hours of sunshine and colder days.
In fact, I'd argue that the great outdoors becomes even greater this time of year. And I'm not just making this up! There's science to back up my theory that you should start spending even more time outside during the fall.
4 Reasons to get outside during autumn
Beat SAD before it begins
Approximately 10 million Americans, or about 5% of the US population, are affected by Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD). Those who experience SAD usually report it lasting around 40% of the year. Getting outside in natural sunlight can counteract the effects of SAD— even if it's cold or cloudy outside.
Even if you don't suffer from SAD, being outside can promote serotonin production, leading to an improved mood, better sleep, and a mind primed for learning.
Exercise feels good

Getting your sweat on during summer can really take a toll on your hydration and energy levels. I'm no statistician, but this math works: as the temperatures drop, the possibility of enjoying exercise increases. Milder weather means less sweat, beautiful surroundings, and fewer crowds. Need I say more?
Of course, you'll still need to drink plenty of liquids and dress appropriately (layers, layers, layers!), but autumn workouts just feel good.
Ward off illness
Aside from physical comfort, working out in cooler weather can help boost your immune system to beat off the nasty colds and flus of the season. With less sun, you need to be more intentional about keeping your vitamin D levels up by spending more time outside. The benefits of vitamin D include a better mood, enhanced bone, muscle, and nerve health, and reduced inflammation.
Plus, cooler weather forces your body to work harder during training, improving your cardiovascular system as you do your usual workout. When you get your heart pumping, it carries disease-fighting blood cells throughout your body. So long sniffles!
Get in the (circadian) rhythm

This time of year, many people leave for work before the sun rises and return home after it sets. Lack of natural sunlight can wreak havoc on your circadian rhythm, destroying your sleep cycle, interfering with your gastrointestinal and cardiovascular systems, and messing with your metabolism.
Expose yourself to natural sunlight first thing in the morning to keep your sleep-wake cycle synced as daylight hours dwindle.
