Manhattan has no shortage of Pilates studios, and they don't all work the same way. Some teach large group classes, some are small and appointment-only, and some are built around a single piece of equipment. Before you buy a class pack or commit to a plan, here are seven things worth checking.
1. Who Is Teaching, and How Much Attention Do You Get?
Ask about instructor training and about how many people share the room. An instructor can only correct what they can see, so smaller classes mean more feedback. At Enhancewell, group classes are capped at six people, and our BURN combo classes at three.
2. What Equipment Does the Studio Have?
Mat-only studios and fully equipped studios offer very different experiences. Look for reformers, towers, chairs and barrels in good working order, and ask whether the class you're booking actually uses them. Our classes split time between reformers and wall towers, and private sessions run on the full classical apparatus.
3. Is There an Easy Way to Try It?
A studio that's confident in its teaching makes it simple to try before you commit. Look for single-class options, a free or introductory class, or a private session designed around beginners. We list a free 50-minute Community Class on our booking calendar and offer single classes, so you can get a feel for the studio before buying a pack.
4. Are the Prices and Policies Clear?
You shouldn't have to hunt for prices or cancellation rules. Ask how far ahead you can cancel, what happens to a class credit if you miss a session, and whether packs expire. Ours are spelled out on the class and private session pages.
5. Is the Location Easy to Reach?
The best studio is the one you'll actually get to. Think about the commute from both home and work, and what time of day you'd realistically go. Enhancewell is at 41 Union Square West, Suite 501, a short walk from the 4/5/6, N/Q/R/W and L trains at 14th St-Union Square.
6. Does the Studio Adapt to You?
Everyone arrives with a different history. A good studio asks about your goals and any physical limitations before the session and adjusts the work to suit. We ask you to tell your instructor about any concerns before class begins. Enhancewell Pilates is fitness instruction, not medical treatment, so if you're working around an injury, check with your own physician or physical therapist first.
7. Does It Feel Right When You Walk In?
Atmosphere is harder to measure, but it matters. Notice whether instructors greet you, whether the room is set up before class, and whether you feel comfortable asking questions. If you're unsure, try a class or two at different studios. A first visit tells you a lot.
Questions to Ask Before You Book
- How many people are in a typical class?
- What equipment will I use in my first class?
- Can I try a single class or a free option first?
- What is the cancellation policy for classes and for private sessions?
- Can the instructor adapt exercises around my limits?
Curious how we'd answer those? Browse our classes, read about private sessions, or see what to expect in your first private Pilates session. When you're ready, you can book a first visit.
